Explosive Drone Disrupts German Airport
Drone Discovery And Aircraft Collision Trigger Security Response At Leipzig/Halle

A drone carrying an explosive device was discovered inside a secure cargo operations area at Leipzig/Halle Airport. The finding temporarily halted flight operations and prompted a major security response involving counter-terrorism authorities. The incident took an additional turn when another unidentified object struck a cargo aircraft attempting to land.
An airport staff member discovered the drone near the airport’s south runway shortly before midnight, according to Saxony state police. Authorities deployed a bomb disposal robot and removed the detonator attached to the device.
The discovery forced a temporary suspension of flight operations, with several aircraft, including a passenger flight, diverted to other airports. The north runway later reopened following an inspection, while the south runway remained closed as authorities continued their investigation.
The disruption was compounded when a cargo aircraft encountered an unidentified flying object after aborting its landing because the runway was closed. The aircraft sustained minor damage but landed safely at Hannover Airport.
German state prosecutors have taken over the investigation alongside Saxony’s Central Office for Extremism and the Police Terrorism and Extremism Defense Center. Saxony Interior Minister Armin Schuster called the developments a “very serious security incident.”
Leipzig/Halle is one of Europe’s major cargo hubs and has hosted Antonov Airlines aircraft since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine destroyed the carrier’s home base.
With unauthorized drones increasingly appearing near airports and other sensitive sites, the events at Leipzig/Halle underscore how quickly a small unmanned aircraft can become a major aviation security concern.
